The plain-English definition
Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. When a small number of them are joined by peptide bonds — conventionally somewhere between two and fifty — the resulting molecule is called a peptide. Longer chains are called proteins.
Length matters because it changes how a molecule behaves in the body: how quickly enzymes break it down, whether it can cross membranes, and how it must be administered. Most peptide medicines are injected precisely because the digestive tract degrades them.

Insulin is a peptide. So is a cosmetic serum ingredient. So is an experimental molecule sold online as 'research use only'. They share chemistry, not evidence, oversight, or risk.
The most common reasoning error in this field is treating the word 'peptide' as a shorthand for a benefit. It is only a shorthand for a molecular class.
- Approved peptide medicines have been reviewed by regulators for a specific use and population.
- Investigational peptides are being tested; their benefit-risk balance is not yet established.
- Cosmetic peptides are regulated for topical safety, not therapeutic effect.
- 'Research use only' products are not evaluated for human administration at all.
How to read a peptide claim
Ask three questions before anything else: what is the molecule, what has been measured in humans, and what is its regulatory status. If a source cannot answer those, it is marketing rather than science.
